"I had been severely stressed for a year, suffering from anxiety, migraines and insomnia. Although initially sceptical, I tried acupuncture out of desperation and couldn't believe how quick the results were! I felt a difference from the first week and within three weeks I was sleeping soundly, the migraines had diminished, I felt much calmer and able to cope. After three months I was a changed person and the symptoms haven't returned. Acupuncture is the only thing that has given me true hope for the future."

Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing that has been practiced in China and the East for thousands of years. Although acclaimed as an effective means of pain relief, acupuncture is in fact used to treat a wide range of illnesses and complaints. As well as treating specific symptoms, acupuncture focuses on improving the overall wellbeing of the patient to recover their equilibrium between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of life.

According to traditional Eastern philosophy our health is dependent upon our body's motivating energy - the 'chi' - which consists of equal and opposite qualities of Yin and Yang. When these become unbalanced illness may result. By inserting fine needles into points on the energy channels, an acupuncturist stimulates the body's healing responses and helps to restore its natural balance. The benefits of acupuncture frequently include more than relief from a specific ailment. Many people find that it also leads to increased energy levels, better appetite, improved sleep, as well as an enhanced sense of wellbeing.

Most people's experience of needles is of those used in injections and blood tests. While acupuncture needles are individually packaged, sterile, single-use and disposable, they bear little resemblance to medical needles. When the acupuncture needle is inserted, the sensation is often described as a tingling or dull ache - nothing like the sharp and unpleasant pricks from a sewing needle, for example. Needles are inserted either for a second or two, or left in place for up to 20 minutes, depending on the effect required.

During an acupuncture treatment, patients commonly experience heaviness in the limbs or a pleasant feeling of relaxation that continues after the session is complete.
